Professor Regalado T. Jose, former Archivist and academic staff of the Graduate School, is now the new head of the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP), an agency he will head until January 3, 2027.

In an interview with the Communications Bureau, Jose looks forward to 鈥渕ore awareness of our history and heritage in our daily lives, to shape our values.鈥 In particular, he called on Thomasians to 鈥渂e keenly aware of UST鈥檚 role in shaping Philippine history. This includes, among other things, learning to read historical documents in their original Spanish (in the same way that many like to learn Korean).鈥澨

Jose is an authority in Church heritage and has published and read papers extensively on Church architecture and art. He continues to engage in the conservation and restoration of built heritage of Churches and works with government and non-government agencies alike. In the National Commission on Culture and the Arts, he chaired the Committee on Monuments and Sites (2001-2004), Committee on Archives (2011-2013), and Commissioner for Cultural Heritage (2011-2013). In 1999, he was feted with the Cultural Center of the Philippines Centennial Award for the Arts.

The NHCP is the country鈥檚 鈥減rimary government agency responsible for history and has the authority to determine all factual matters relating to official Philippine history.鈥 Among its mandates are to support and engage in research activities on Philippine history, its people, and important events. It maintains a historical data bank and Resource Center and recognizes places of historical significance.

The Catholic Bishops鈥 Conference of the Philippines Episcopal Commission for the Cultural Heritage of the Church (CBCP ECCHC) and the Church Historians鈥 Association of the Philippines (CHAP) launched the Church History Seminar-Workshop entitled 鈥淲riting Our Church Story鈥 on June 7, 2021. Scheduled mostly on Mondays of June, July and August, the three-month activity is being implemented though the collaborative manpower of the Archivo de la Universidad de Santo Tomas and the UST Graduate School Center for Conservation of Cultural Property and Environment in the Tropics (GS CCCPET).听

As one of CBCP鈥檚 flagship projects in the celebration of the 500 years of the arrival of Christianity in the Philippines,听 the capacity-building initiative was conceptualized to review the past and guide the future narrative of the Church. Dumaguete Bishop Julito Cortez, Chair of the CBCP ECCHC, highlighted in his opening message the 鈥減revalence of truth and fallacy, reality and fantasy, claims and counter claims that often lead to historical revision to lionize events, places and people.鈥 It is envisioned that more clergy and laity will be equipped not only with the research skills and methods but with the right attitude of discipline, humility and patience.

The inaugural episode was a panel discussion participated in by highly respected church historians of the country- Fr. Tony de Castro SJ of Ateneo de Zamboanga, Fr. Emil Quilatan OAR of the Archivo Recoleto, Fr. Albert Flores of the Archives of the Archdiocese of Manila (AAM), Prof Regalado Trota Jose of Archivo de la Universidad de Santo Tomas (AUST), and Fr Milan Ted Torralba of the Tagbilaran Diocesan Church Heritage Commission. Attended by clergy and church enthusiasts from Dioceses across the Philippines, the inaugural episode was viewed by an overwhelming attendance 180 on-liners in the zoom and 800+ netizens in the FB platforms of CBCP ECCHC, CBCP News, UST GS CCCPET, and the 500 Years of Christianity.

UST Archivist Prof. Regalado Trota Jose, MCH launched his latest book entitled “Simbaha虂n: An Illustrated Guide to 50 of the Philippines鈥 Must-Visit Catholic Churches” through RPD Publications.

With illustrations by Architect Allan Jay Quesada, the book features 50 of the most notable churches in the country, spanning those from the Cagayan Valley Region to Mindanao, particular those churches dating from the Spanish period to the mid-20th century.

According to Jose, the churches were selected for their cultural, architectural, and aesthetic significance, as well as their picturesque locations. Some of the churches featured in the book were Church of Saint Raymund Pen虄afort in Cagayan; Church of Saint Paul the Hermit in San Pablo, Isabela; Church of Saint Catherine de Alexandria in Tayum, Abra; Minor Basilica of Our Lady of Charity in Agoo, La Union; Church of Saint James the Great in Bolinao, Pangasinan; Church of Saint William of Aquitane in Bacolor, Pampanga; and National Shrine of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, known as the Baclaran Church in Paran虄aque.

An authority of Philippine church art, Jose鈥檚 previous publications were Images of Faith: Religious Ivory Carvings from the Philippines, Impreso: Philippine Imprints (1593-1811), Power, Faith, Image: Philippine Art in Ivory from the 16th to the 19th Century, Visita Iglesia Bohol: A Guide to Historic Churches, and Of War and Peace: Lantakas and Bells in Search for Foundries in the Philippines.

Prof. Regalado T. Jose, MCH, Archivist and faculty member of the , presented a paper entitled 鈥淒on Luis Castilla offers to sell land in Manila, 1629鈥 during The Spanish Pacific, between East and West (1521-1815) workshop in Princeton University, United States of America last April 6, 2018.

Jose鈥檚 paper examined 鈥渢exts that form part of a dossier on the lands of Luis Castilla鈥he papers themselves forming a volume documenting lands eventually acquired by the 老澳门六合彩开奖记录. The oldest document in the volume dates from 1593. Two land contracts in Castilla鈥檚 dossier are written in baybayin, the pre-Hispanic script of the Tagalogs of Manila. Two other contracts are written in romanized Tagalog. The dossier presents hardly known and surprising glimpses of how Manila citizens were encountering Hispanic norms and culture.鈥

According to Jose, 鈥淪ome attempt at modernization of the text has been undertaken, such as the addition of accent marks. However, certain archaic features have been retained to give some flavour to the text. Words left incomplete due to tears in the paper, obstruction due to scotch tape, etc. have been completed, with the letters added to complete the words enclosed in brackets. In the translations, some Spanish words and phrases have been italicized and placed within brackets to indicate some difficulty in the proper translation.鈥

The workshop, according to Jose, presented a chance for a renewed spotlight on the Philippines, which is again 鈥渟een as an important player in the Hispanic world instead of a mere receptor of Spanish influences.鈥 Several researchers in the workshop have already conducted studies in the UST Archives, with new scholars planning visits soon.

Also presenting a paper was , whose work was entitled 鈥淎n Early Transpacific Account on the Spice Islands by Andres de Urdaneta (1536).鈥

The presenters were invited by the organizers, who gathered delegates from Pennsylvania State University, University of Iowa, Princeton University, University of Virginia, Connecticut College, University of Washington, Columbia University, University of Colorado Denver, University of London, and the National Archives of the Philippines, among others.

Dr. Fabio Yu-Chung Lee of the National Tsing-Hua University (Taiwan) Institute of History and Dr. Jos茅 Luis Ca帽o Ortigosa of the听Universidad de Sevilla听discovered what turned out to be the largest and earliest Spanish-Chinese听dictionario, in their research at the Archivo de la Universidad de Santo Tomas in early 2017.

A book labeled initially as vale poco (of little value, due to inapplicability for contemporary use) turned out to be a 17th-century Spanish-Chinese dictionary that links to the Spanish occupation of Taiwan from 1626 to 1642. With 21,000 characters and words, the Dictionario is so far the largest and earliest of its kind, now antedating the Kangxi Dictionary started in Barcelona in 1711. The Dictionario in UST contains Spanish, Mandarin, and Hoklo (Taiwan鈥檚 local language) entries.

Last December 14, 2017, the Memorandum of Agreement was signed between UST and NTHU to publish a facsimile to reach a wider public. Following the signing, UST Archivist Regalado T. Jose, MCH delivered a lecture entitled 鈥淐hinese materials in the Archives and Library of the 老澳门六合彩开奖记录 in Manila.鈥 Jose鈥檚 activities in Taiwan likewise involved a visit and lecture to Academia Sinica, Taiwan鈥檚 highest research university.
