The Institute of Religion and the Center for Theology, Religious Studies, and Ethics of the 老澳门六合彩开奖记录 with the University of Fribourg held the 10th Archbishop Leonardo Legaspi, O.P. Lecture Series and Saliksikan on November 13, 2023.

Themed 鈥淐ultivating Global Citizenship within the Framework of Caring for Creation,鈥 the hybrid event heard speakers from the Dominican University Ibadan, Nigeria; University of Fribourg, Switzerland; and 老澳门六合彩开奖记录, Manila.

Prof. Joel C. Sagut, Ph.D., the Director of UST鈥檚 Center for Theology, Religious Studies, and Ethics, delivered a talk that focused on the 鈥渦nique place of the human person in God鈥檚 creation.鈥 In his presentation, Sagut states that man鈥檚 God-given 鈥減osition of authority, royal mission, and priesthood entails a heavy responsibility of serving and working for those entrusted to (his) care.鈥

Prof. Rey Donne S. Papa, Ph.D. dealt with the topic of integral ecology citing research findings from the UST College of Science where he serves as Dean. 鈥淢an was given the faculties to care for creation,鈥 Papa said, 鈥渁nd those faculties need harnessing for communities to live the Church鈥檚 call for integral ecology,鈥 he added.

Prof. Dr. Helmut Zander from the University of Fribourg underscores the realities in finding a solution to the problems surrounding our environment. He concludes that the most we can do is to increase our perception of the ecological crisis we are facing. Zander cited realizing ways globalization affects countries like Nigeria, Switzerland, and the Philippines with unique beliefs, traditions, and socio-cultural contexts. Reducing such complexities is a clear goal, but reducing complexities necessitates acknowledgment and acceptance, he concluded.

Speaking on 鈥淓cological Challenges: Intersectionality of Plastics and Climate Change,鈥 Prof. Arlen Ancheta, Ph.D. of the UST Faculty of Arts and Letters and the Research Center for Social Science and Education showed ways by which plastic has compromised the natural environment and human health. Ancheta urges creative, critical, and holistic thinking so that communities can identify opportunities and develop strategies to address the abusive use of plastic as well as the impacts of climate change.

Dominican Friar Hans Ulrich Steymans from the University of Fribourg presented the writings of Catholic eco-theologians advocating care for creation, including Sean McDonagh, SCC, and Dawn M. Nothwehr, OSF. Biblical studies on the environment were also cited like the works of Norman C. Habel and Niels Henrik Gregersen.

Dominican Friar Fr. Dokun Oyeshola from the University of Ibadan in his talk titled, 鈥淓ffects of Corruption and Addressing Climate Change in Nigeria,鈥 discussed the effects of corruption as it halts mitigation measures to address climate change. He also called upon the Church to work vigorously to impact on the morality of global politics. 鈥淭he Church must work vigorously in upholding the planet鈥檚 heritage as a gift to all human beings,鈥 he emphasized.

Prof. Ivo Wallimann-Heimer from the University of Fribourg finally discussed 鈥淚njustice in Renewable Energy Transmission鈥 where he outlined the challenges posed by government-sponsored moves towards renewable energy generation and consumption. On community participation, the scholar favored substantial equality where individuals are given access to education, information, and a fair share of economic resources. On the decision-making end, however, Wallimann-Heimer suggested that all those affected by environmental risks must be involved in making meaningful decisions.

The Saliksikan and Archbishop Leonardo Legaspi, O.P. Lecture Series were jointly conceived as a platform for intellectual discussions on themes affecting the human person鈥檚 integral development.

This year鈥檚 event coincided with the 鈥淪ymposium on Global Catholicism: Ecology and Climate Change鈥 organized by CoMIF or the Collaboration of Manila, Ibadan, and Fribourg.

A lecture entitled Baoulan to Kadurog: Histories of Life and Loss in Philippine Freshwaters was held on September 8, 2023 at the College of Science. The lecture was delivered by Dr. Anthony Medrano of the National University of Singapore, a science historian who specializes in biodiversity studies. Medrano has been appointed as a Presidential Young Professor of Environmental Studies of Yale-NUS College and an Assistant Professor at the NUS Department of History.

Medrano’s talk focused on the extinction of Lake Lanao鈥檚 15 endemic cyprinid fishes from the genus Barbodes, including the highly prized Barbodes baoulan which was eventually traced to the proliferation of an invasive fish species, Glossogobius giuris. The latter was introduced to the lake during the 1960s to augment local fisheries. As a historian, Medrano also provided perspectives on the history of the discovery of the endemic cyprinids of Lake Lanao, including the scientists who discovered the said species and documented the decline of Lake Lanao鈥檚 biodiversity.

The lecture was attended by undergraduate and graduate students in Biology as well as select faculty members of the Department of Biological Sciences. The event was organized by undergraduate BS Biology major in Medical Biology students under 2MBio3 as part of their General Ecology (Bio 426) class under the supervision of Dean Rey Donne S. The UST Research and Endowment Foundation Inc. (REFI) won a P16.5 million grant recently to conduct an action research project on environmental conservation and ecotourism in Siquijor province.

UST REFI was awarded the grant by the Gerry Roxas Foundation (GRF) and the Philippine office of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) for the project titled 鈥淪iquijor Island Conservation and Restoration: Toward a Regenerative Ecotourism Destination鈥.

This action research project was among 11 recipients of grants from GRF鈥檚 program called INSPIRE or Investing in Sustainable Partnerships for Inclusive Growth and Regenerative Ecosystems.

Looking at both seascapes and landscapes, the project aims to ensure that the island鈥檚 natural ecosystems 鈥渨ill be conserved and restored, leading to a sustainable and regenerative Siquijor Island鈥. For 2.5 years, this action research project hopes to aid Siquijor鈥檚 collaborative governance efforts on environmental protection, environmental conservation education, and achieving community-based sustainable livelihood.

The project seeks to empower Siquijor鈥檚 provincial and municipal governments to regulate the use of trees and medicinal plants, curb illegal and unregulated fishing activities, encourage tourism development, reduce solid and liquid wastes, and control freshwater consumption. These efforts contribute to the vision of making Siquijor a 鈥渮ero-waste island鈥.

A team from REFI will spearhead the project, led by Executive Director Fr. Maximo Gatela, O.P. and Technical Team Leader Dr. Moises Norman Garcia of the College of Science. Team members include Dr. Maria Rosario Virginia Cobar-Garcia (Science), Dr. Arlen Ancheta and Dr. Alain Jomarie Santos (both from the Faculty of Arts and Letters), as well as Asst. Prof. Arnold Distor and Asst. Prof. Racquel Layco (Science).

Dr. Ancheta, Dr. Cobar-Garcia, Dr. Garcia, and Asst. Prof. Layco had done studies on the zero-waste island concept, covering solid waste management, energy efficiency, food and water, and sustainable use of natural resources. These previous studies were conducted for a global advocacy group, the Global Alliance for Incinerator Alternatives (GAIA), under the auspices of the Research Center for Social Sciences and Education (or RCSSED, UST鈥檚 social sciences research arm).

According to team leader Dr. Moises Norman Garcia, the previous studies and the current INSPIRE-funded project will capitalize on 鈥渆nvironmental advocacy to counter climate change and [take inspiration from] Pope Francis鈥檚 encyclical Laudato S铆.鈥

This INSPIRE-funded project contributes to climate change action, says this full professor of Biological Sciences, by directly aligning the project to some of the sustainable development goals (SDGs) of the United Nations.

UST REFI formalized its receipt of the INSPIRE grants during a May 22 grants awarding ceremony at the National Museum of Natural History, with the US Ambassador to the Philippines, Her Excellency Mary Kay L. Carlson, gracing the event.
